One of our favorite professional planting tricks, especially during summer planting, is a method often called “puddling in.”
Before planting, dig the hole and fill it with water. Let that water drain into the surrounding soil. In very dry conditions, you can do this a second time.
Then place the plant, backfill the hole, create a small watering well around the plant, and water deeply again.
This gives the new plant moisture where it needs it most — down in the planting hole and around the root zone — instead of only wetting the surface.
A few days later, fill the watering well again. Repeating this several times helps the plant settle in and encourages the roots to move into the surrounding soil.
Important note: in heavy clay soil, the water should drain before planting. If the hole stays full of water for hours, drainage may be poor and the plant may need to be planted higher or the site may need to be reconsidered.
